Sandra (Sandy) L. Atkins, age 82, of Novi, passed away on August 12, 2026. She was born on August 19, 1943, in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, the daughter of Stuart and Kathleen (nee Kirk) Lawson. She grew up in Windsor and graduated from Saint Mary’s Academy with the Class of 1962. She met the love of her life, Larry Atkins, through mutual friends. Sandy and Larry were united in marriage on February 16, 1963, and shared 42 years together until his passing in 2005. In 1966, Sandy and Larry moved to Michigan, where they lived in Fraser and Canton for 25 years and raised their daughters before moving to Novi in 2001.
Sandy worked for AAA Insurance Company for 30 years, holding several positions throughout her career. She retired in 2000 as a Test Analyst. She was a dedicated and loyal employee who took great pride in her work and commitment to the company.
Sandy was a talented and creative woman who enjoyed expressing herself through many different crafts. Among her projects, she created beautiful stained-glass pieces and delicate ceramic artwork. She loved sewing, making many fabulous Halloween and theater costumes and enjoyed being the go-to for dance costumes, dresses, and uniform alterations. Within her family, her most renowned works were her knitted “Grandma Blankets” that her daughters and grandchildren were gifted each year so that her family would always be wrapped in love.
Sandy treasured her role as a grandmother and especially enjoyed creating memories with her grandchildren. She looked forward to special outings to Greenfield Village, the zoo, and her annual fall trips to the apple orchards for donuts. She supported her grandchildren at each of their events– cheering them on whether it was for their dance recitals, plays, or sports games. While she had many interests and talents, Sandra’s greatest joy was her family. She cherished the time they spent together and was happiest when surrounded by those she loved.
Sandra was a devoted wife, loving mother, proud grandmother, and a loyal friend. Though she will be deeply missed, her memory will live on in the hearts of her family and friends, who will cherish the many wonderful moments they shared with her.
Sandra is survived by her loving daughters, Karen (Gary) Andrews and Michelle (Bill) Demshuk; her grandchildren, Madeline (TJ) McGinnis, Samantha (Andrej Svabic) Andrews, Megan Demshuk, Matthew Demshuk, and Craig Demshuk; and her great granddaughter, Campbell Elizabeth. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her sister Marilyn Szalay.
Sandra will be laid to rest at The Preserve at All Saints Cemetery in Waterford, Michigan. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions would be appreciated to the American Red Cross, PO Box 37839, Boone, IA 50037-0839.
