Richard M. Henningsen: A Pillar of Northville Township
Richard M. Henningsen, a distinguished resident of Northville Township, passed away peacefully on July 29th at the age of 89. He had been a cornerstone of the community for decades, and his extensive contributions to public service and unwavering dedication to the township have left an indelible mark.
Born in Toledo, Ohio, in August 1935, Mr. Henningsen's life was one of service, leadership, and community building. A proud alumnus of Bowling Green State University, he served his country with distinction in the U.S. Army, achieving the rank of Captain. Following his military service, he embarked on a successful financial career at General Motors, from which he retired.
It was after his retirement that Mr. Henningsen began his impactful second career in public service, dedicating his time and expertise to the betterment of Northville Township. His commitment to the community was multifaceted, holding key positions as Township Treasurer, Township Manager, and Township Supervisor.
Mr. Henningsen's leadership and dedication did not go unnoticed. In recognition of his significant contributions, he was honored as the Northville Chamber of Commerce's Citizen of the Year in 2007. A lasting tribute to his legacy is Henningsen Park, a three-acre park located behind the Northville Township Police Department on Six Mile Road, featuring two ball diamonds for the enjoyment of residents.
Beyond his official duties, Mr. Henningsen was known for his love and devotion to the game of golf. He was a loving husband to Martha "Ann" Henningsen, who passed away in November 2019 after 61 years of marriage. He is a devoted father to his children, Douglas, David, Beth, and Dan; a cherished brother to his sister, Susan; and a beloved grandfather to Jessica and Davis. He was predeceased by his parents, Minerd and Margaret (Kostaff) Henningsen.
Visitation will be held on August 4 from 12:00-1:00 pm, with a memorial service beginning at 1:00 pm at Casterline Funeral Home, 122 W Dunlap St, Northville, MI 48167.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
