John O. Stock, age 81, longtime resident of Northville, passed away on April 14, 2022. He was born on February 28, 1941 in Saginaw, Michigan. John graduated in 1959 from Arthur Hill High School where he played football. He continued his education at Central Michigan University where he earned both a Bachelor and Master of Mathematics.
John worked as a mathematics professor for Lawrence Technical University, retiring in 2000. He taught various mathematics courses (his favorite being statistics) and pioneered the teaching of computer science, back when computers were the size of an entire room. He also painted addresses on curbs in Kings Mill each summer for 44 years. Following retirement, he continued to work for the Kings Mill Association and Clubhouse.
John very much enjoyed spending time by himself and was a minimalist before it was cool. He often traveled to Chicago, Cleveland, New York, Stratford, and Toronto for theater performances and museum exhibits. He also enjoyed attending the movies and spending quiet evenings at home sketching while listening to classical jazz or watching television. He was an avid reader, spending countless hours in bookstores, most recently enjoying biographies of artists such as Leonardo DaVinci and Vincent Van Gogh. Late in life, John liked to ride his bike along the river through Hines Park to downtown Northville for a piece of Zingerman’s pumpkin pie at Tuscan Café or to visit the local chocolate store. One of his greatest joys was going out to brunch or dinner with his family. John was a beloved father, grandfather, and brother and will be dearly missed by those who loved him.
He is survived by his loving daughters, Sarah Cantrell and Julia Skuratowicz and their husbands David and Dave; his granddaughters, Rebecca, Jennifer, and Victoria; and his siblings, Daniel (Jean) Stock, Brady (Cindy) Stock, Ron Stock and Janet (Thomas) Pierce; his sister-in-law Shirley Marlow; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son Stephan Stock, his parents, Orval and Dorothy (Eierman) Stock, and his brother Orval B. Stock.
Private family services were held. In lieu of flowers, contributions would be appreciated to the American Red Cross , P.O. Box 37839, Boone, IA 50037.
