John J. Ruttenberg, age 94, of Novi, passed away on June 8, 2026. He was born on January 26, 1932 in Detroit, Michigan; son of Jules and Leila (Tiffin) Ruttenberg. John was united in marriage to Marilyn Mason Genung on October 18, 1958; they spent 67 years lovingly devoted to one another.
John was a proud graduate of Cass Technical High School, Class of 1955. He went on to attend Wayne State University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in Industrial Management followed by a master's degree in Accounting.
While attending college, John worked as an industrial engineer with Ford Motor Company and its subsidiaries. Upon completing his education, he continued his career with Ford, serving as a financial analyst, senior accountant, and ultimately Senior Auditor. Through hard work, professionalism, and dedication, John built a successful 30-year career with the company before retiring.
John proudly served his country in the United States Air Force beginning 1956, retiring as a Lt. Colonel. After completing Navigator School, he was assigned to base operations and flew aboard transport aircraft on missions throughout Europe. Following his honorable discharge from active duty, he continued his service in the Air Force Reserves. During the Pueblo Crisis, John was recalled to active duty, serving as a navigator on rescue aircraft that deployed Pararescue Jumpers ("PJs") for recovery missions involving personnel, capsules, and other critical objects. His dedication to military service spanned 25 years, reflecting his deep commitment to his country and fellow service members.
John was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Northville for many years. An avid aviation enthusiast, John was a private pilot for many years and found great joy in taking to the skies. He also enjoyed sailing and was a longtime member of the Ford Yacht Club. John began each day with The Wall Street Journal and followed the stock market with keen interest. A talented amateur magician, he delighted friends, family, and church communities with his tricks and performances at birthday parties and special events. Above all, John cherished his family. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and his granddaughters held a particularly special place in his heart.
John is survived by his loving wife, Marilyn Ruttenberg; his children, Denise (Bill) Harben and Bruce (Terri) Ruttenberg; and his grandchildren, Stephanie (Brett) Miller, Dr. Alyssa (Dr. Luke Watson) Harben, Tiffany Harben, Lauren Ruttenberg, and Rachel Ruttenberg.
