John P. Manica

Jul 11, 1943 — May 22, 2026

John P. Manica, MD, age 82, a longtime resident of Northville, passed away on May 22, 2026. He was born in St. Cloud, Minnesota on July 11, 1943 to John and Marioara (Pavel) Manica. John was united in marriage to Renee L. Tarrow on July 14, 1983; they spent just shy of 43 years lovingly devoted to one another.

John graduated from the University of Detroit Jesuit High School and Academy with the Class of 1961 before earning his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from University of Detroit. John went on to attend medical school at Wayne State University School of Medicine, where he earned his Doctor of Medicine degree. He completed his residency at Nationwide Children’s Hospital through The Ohio State University, where he proudly served as chief resident. After residency, John completed a fellowship in pediatric neurology at St. Louis Children’s Hospital.

Following his fellowship, John joined Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak as a pediatric neurologist. He later continued his career in clinical practice at Michigan Institute for Neurological Disorders, where he cared for patients until his retirement in 2019 at the age of 75.

John was an avid sports fan who faithfully cheered on all of the Detroit teams and was a devoted fan of his alma mater The Ohio State University. As a proud member of the Titan Club, he closely followed the Detroit Mercy Titans men's basketball team and attended many games throughout the years.

John met his beloved wife Renee of 42 years at Northville Downs. Known around the track simply as “Doc,” John spent many Friday evenings studying the upcoming races and could often be found at the track on Saturday nights, frequently with his boys by his side.

John enjoyed keeping up with current events and rarely missed reading the newspaper each day. He also found joy in life’s simple routines, especially grocery shopping, where he never skipped an aisle and was always on the lookout for a good sale. For many years, August meant time spent at a cottage along the Canadian shores of Lake Erie, where John welcomed family and friends with an open invitation to visit. He loved bringing people together and creating a place filled with laughter, relaxation, and fun.

John was a devoted husband who took great pride in caring for and providing for his wife throughout their life together. He was also a loving and supportive father who was proud of his sons’ accomplishments. Of all the roles he cherished in life, none brought him greater happiness than being “Grandpa” to his four beloved granddaughters, with a fifth granddaughter soon to arrive. John will be remembered for his intelligence, quick wit, generosity, and unwavering love for his family. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, former patients, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

John is survived by his beloved wife, Renee Manica; his twin sons, John (Smisha) Manica and Nicholas (Brianna) Manica; his granddaughters, Ara, Ayla, Ava, Adelina, and one on the way; and his sisters, Diane Manica and Marioara Yavello. He was preceded in death by his parents.
