James S. Lego

November 25, 1940 — July 25, 2025

James Lego, age 84, a longtime resident of Novi, passed away on July 25, 2025. He was born on November 25, 1940 in Detroit, Michigan; son of Edmund and Ethel Lego. James was united in marriage to Frances on December 29, 1962; they spent over 62 years dedicated to their love and family.

Jim graduated from Cody High School with the Class of 1958. In 1960, he enlisted in the United States Navy, where he proudly served for four years. After completing his military service, Jim began a long and fulfilling career with MPT Drives, Inc. He started in the warehouse, and through years of hard work and dedication, moved into the sales department before eventually becoming a co-owner of the company. Though he officially retired after 40 years, Jim never truly stepped away—his loyal customers continued to seek him out, and he was always happy to help.

Jim was a man with many interests, and whatever he pursued, he gave it his all. His drive and determination made him excel in everything he did. An avid and skilled golfer, Jim loved playing courses across the United States, often alongside his best friend, Sam, and many other close friends. He was a longtime member of the Plum Hollow Country Club, where he proudly served on the board and created cherished memories with his family during special holiday meals. One of his proudest golfing moments came on June 30, 1991, when he scored a Hole-in-One on the 14th hole—a 142-yard par 3—at Plum Hollow.

Another sport Jim enjoyed was bowling. Over the years, he was a dedicated member of multiple leagues, forming many lasting friendships along the way. He consistently bowled in the 850 series, with an impressive average in the 260s. Bowling was something he loved sharing with his family, and even when he was no longer able to play, Jim still made regular trips to the bowling alley to watch his teammates bowl and enjoy a pizza with them afterwords.

After retiring, Jim took up cooking for his wife and embraced it wholeheartedly. He enjoyed trying new recipes he found online, but his signature dish was always his spectacular salmon and asparagus. Tuesday nights were his night off, as he and Fran made it a tradition to dine at Mitchell’s Fish Market where he enjoyed the Twin Lobster Tail special.

Always a car enthusiast, Jim had a lifelong love for cars and driving fast. His first pride and joy was a 1964 Pontiac GTO, and he was so devoted to it that he was once caught polishing the wheels in the living room. He later cherished his 1965 Corvette, a car he held dear for many years. When it became too much for him to maintain, he passed it on to his son, who kept Jim updated on every improvement and upgrade—something they both enjoyed sharing together.

Jim was an animal lover, but he had a special place in his heart for his two cats, the late Simon and Buddy. Though he liked to pretend he never wanted them, it was clear who the real softie was—he was always the first to spoil them.

Jim was a handsome and intelligent man, but it was his honesty that truly defined him. He had a sharp sense of humor and loved to surprise others with a well-timed jump scare, always followed by his biggest laugh. Above all, Jim was an incredible husband, a devoted father, a cherished grandfather, and a loyal friend to many.

Jim is survived by his wife Fran; his children, Michael (Pam) and Michele; his grandchildren, Jordan, Jared, Ava, and Joe; and his great grandson Lincoln. He is also survived by his cousin Bob (Carole) and his dear friends Sam (Jackie). He was preceded in death by his parents.

A private family service will be held. Memorial contributions may be made to Humane Society of Huron Valley, 3100 Cherry Hill Rd, Ann Arbor, MI 48105.
