Clayton E. Walker

Jul 2, 1952 — Jul 1, 2026

Clayton E. Walker, age 73, a longtime resident of Canton, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on July 1, 2026. He was born on July 2, 1952 in Garden City, Michigan; son of Frederick and Geraldine (Karschnick) Walker. He was united in marriage to Sally L. Mahoney on October 22, 1977; they spent 48 years in marriage.

Clayton grew up in Northville on Horton St. and was a proud member of the Northville High School Class of 1970. As a young man he loved working at Parmenter’s Cider Mill, hanging out with friends along Hines Drive, and going to see live music, including artists like Bob Seger. Clayton worked his entire career as a shipping clerk at NSS, a manufacturing company in Plymouth, and remained with the company throughout his entire career, retiring in 2018 after more than 40 years of service.

Clayton spent 10 years driving the Drum Truck for Plymouth Fife and Drum Corps, serving as Transportation Director from 1994 to 2004. In this role, he ensured that the corps' equipment was transported safely and reliably to performances and competitions. Countless kids in PFDC counted on Big Dawg, as he was known, to store and distribute their equipment and hats for each performance throughout the season. Big Dawg served in nearly 500 parades and concerts across Michigan, the East Coast, and parts of Canada, including places like Arlington Cemetery, Monticello, West Point, Fort Ticonderoga, Fort Michilimackinac, Fort Niagara, Old Fort Henry, and almost every major parade in southeast and mid-Michigan. He was proud to have served this organization as the driver of the Drum Truck.

After his time with the Plymouth Fife and Drum Corps came to an end, Clayton discovered a new calling that brought him immense joy, portraying Santa Claus during the Christmas season. He embraced the role wholeheartedly, attending the renowned Charles W. Howard Santa Claus School in Midland to perfect the craft. Santa was never just a seasonal character to Clayton; it was a year-round passion. He spent the entire year preparing, studying Christmas traditions and enjoying holiday films, with The Christmas Chronicles among his favorites. Being Santa fulfilled a lifelong dream. Once he donned the red suit, Clayton's warm heart, kindness, and joyful spirit shined brightly. Whether celebrating with family and friends or greeting visitors during his time as Santa at Great Lakes Crossing, he delighted in creating magical moments and bringing smiles to children and adults alike. Truly born to be Santa, Clayton spread the spirit of Christmas for many years before retiring from the role in 2025.

Clayton had a lifelong love of music and rarely missed the opportunity to experience it live. An avid concertgoer, he built an extensive collection of blues music and classic rock, and held season tickets to Pine Knob for many years, enjoying performances by countless legendary artists. His first season included unforgettable concerts by Bob Seger, Fleetwood Mac, and John Fogerty. Over the years, he was fortunate to see every member of The Beatles perform live except John Lennon. Other memorable concerts included Alice Cooper, Led Zeppelin, and his final concert was James Taylor. He was also an avid Blues fan with a legendary CD collection. Music was a passion Clayton shared with his sons, and there was rarely a moment when a favorite song wasn't playing in the background of their home.

Clayton was a devoted NASCAR fan, he attended numerous races at Michigan International Speedway over the years and always cheered on his favorite driver, Chase Elliott. He also took great pride in his skills at the grill, earning a reputation, at least in his own mind, as the family's barbecue master. He especially loved grilling food for members of D3 Fife and Drum Corps after their Sunday practices at the Walker home. Whether it was preparing perfectly grilled steaks for family and friends or taking on the annual Thanksgiving turkey for his family to enjoy, he loved cooking. Clayton had a special affection for animals, especially dogs. His beloved companion, Sammy, found him after wandering to his home one day and quickly became a cherished member of the family. Later in life, he found solace attending Life Church in Canton with his son Jeremy.

Clayton's generous heart and welcoming spirit made everyone feel at home. His door was always open to anyone in need, and he found great joy in filling his home with family, friends, and especially children. Although he was affectionately known as "Poppa" to many, his greatest pride and joy were his grandchildren, who held a special place in his heart. Known for his infectious laugh, Clayton had a remarkable ability to brighten the lives of those around him. In a final expression of his enduring love for his wife, his last words were a heartfelt reminder to make sure she knew that he "loved her more.” He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Clayton is survived by his beloved wife, Sally Walker; his sons, Clay (Nicole) Walker, Jr., James (Sara Freeland) Walker, and Jeremy (Jessica Webster) Walker; his grandchildren, Quinn, Morgan, Finnegan, Zoey, Avery, and Ronin; his sister, Eva (Russ) Blackman; his brother-in-law, Michael Mahoney; his sisters-in-law, Allison (Jerry) Terrell, Sue (Mike) Paruszkiewicz, and Janet Shinske; he was also loved by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Rick Walker; his brothers-in-law, JD Mahoney and Jeff Mahoney; and his sister-in-law, Patty Mahoney.
