Claudia S. Balko, age 72, a longtime resident of South Lyon, passed away unexpectedly on July 30, 2025. She was born on July 17, 1953 in Pontiac, Michigan; daughter of G. Carlos and Norma (Allen) Long. Claudia was united in marriage to Rex F. Balko on August 4, 1973; devoted to their love and family for over 51 years.
Claudia graduated from Milford High School with the Class of 1971. During her time there, she was an active member of the 4H Club, a cheerleader, and an officer of the student body. After high school, she began her college studies at Adrian College before transferring to Eastern Michigan University, where she earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in special education.
Claudia began her career in education as a special education teacher at Hawthorne Center in Northville. After 13 years, she joined Novi Public Schools, where she taught special education, as well as general education in 3rd and 4th grade at Parkview Elementary. Claudia was deeply admired by both her students and colleagues, leaving a lasting impact in the classroom and in the lives that she touched. Many of her former students stayed in touch over the years, inviting her to their high school graduation parties and even a wedding. Although she retired in 2014, Claudia remained close with her fellow teachers, regularly meeting for lunch to catch up.
Claudia was a part of the Daughters of the American Revolution, inspired by a deepening interest in genealogy and tracing her family's roots back to their arrival in America. She was also a talented cook and baker, widely known for her famous broccoli cheese casserole, which was a must-have at holiday dinners, and her wide variety of yummy Christmas cookies. An avid scrapbooker, Claudia created thoughtful keepsakes, including special family recipe scrapbooks that she gifted to each of her daughters on their wedding day. In her quiet moments, she enjoyed watching Hallmark movies and had even planned to go on a Hallmark-themed cruise. A dedicated sports fan, Claudia cheered on the Detroit Tigers and the Detroit Lions, and loved watching Michigan State basketball and football.
Claudia’s greatest joy in life was her family. She was devoted to her husband and children, but she absolutely adored her grandchildren. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy. She was a constant presence at their activities; cheering them on at soccer and baseball games, swim meets, and cheer competitions. She treasured the memories made during family vacations, especially trips to Disney and time spent together on their 50th anniversary cruise. Her love and support were unwavering, and her family meant everything to her.
Claudia is survived by her husband Rex; her daughters, Jessica (Matthew) Giffen and Ashley (Joseph) Heath; her sister Brenda Pawluchuk; and her grandchildren, Jack, Max, John, Blake, and Molly. She is also loved and survived by many nieces and nephews. Claudia was preceded in death by her parents.
